George Schuetz

George Schuetz has been employed with Mahr Inc. for more than 40 years in the metrology business. During that time, he has worked in the applications areas for precision cages, special gage designs, and surface and form gaging, working to solve customers’ specific gaging problems.

Over the years, he has contributed articles to magazines including Quality in Manufacturing, Quality Digest, and Quality Magazine, and is a monthly contributor to Modern Machine Shop. He has also written a book, Quality Gaging Tips (Hanser Publications, 2006), a compilation of modern machine shop tips.

‘Squeeze’ GagingMeasuring the thickness of soft materials
Thu, 03/06/2025 - 12:02
Machinists working strictly in metalworking shops don’t have many occasions to gage the thickness of soft materials. But many of our readers work in supporting roles, helping to build or maintain the machines that produce textiles, plastic films,…
Scribing for New HeightsUsing a height gage is simple. Here’s how.
Mon, 01/06/2025 - 12:02
The need for long-range height measurements has been around since the principles of layout work became a fundamental requirement in machine shops. The first step in the manufacturing process is to lay out a piece by transferring a design or pattern…
Finding the Balance for Internal and External CalibrationsMeeting production requirements in the most cost-effective way
Wed, 11/27/2024 - 12:03
Whether you’re a small machine shop or a large multimillion-dollar manufacturing giant, there’s no doubt you use dimensional gauges to maintain the standards for quality in your production. The accuracy of these dimensional measuring instruments…
Finding Common Ground for Measurement DisagreementASME B46.1-2019 for surface texture provides a starting point to help everyone agree on results
Tue, 10/01/2024 - 12:02
When we think about making a simple measurement, such as an outside diameter, many methods can be used. These would include calipers, micrometers, mechanical snap gauges, air snaps, CMMs, and special fixture gauges, just to mention a few. The…
Comparative Gages and Temperature CompensationDealing with variables that use up part tolerance
Tue, 09/10/2024 - 12:03
Electronic temperature compensation in gaging has become a valuable tool in improving the accuracy and gage repeatability and reproducibility (GR&R) of gages in harsh manufacturing environments. The need for temperature compensation comes into…
Measurement Rules of Thumb, Part 2Considering gage design and surface parameters
Tue, 08/27/2024 - 12:03
We ended the previous gaging article talking about the 10:1 rule as it applies to the performance of a gage. The rule says that the gage should perform to a level better than 10% of the tolerance. Although this rule has mostly been replaced by the…
Measurement Rules of Thumb, Part 1Old rules and what still measures up
Wed, 07/31/2024 - 12:01
In this job, I get a lot of questions. In fact, I did some figuring the other day and estimated, conservatively, that we have probably answered at least 50,000 gauging questions over the past 35 years or so. Some of these questions have been…
How to Choose the Right Smart Handheld GaugeHand gauges at the point of manufacture are commonplace, but this doesn’t mean just any gauge can be used
Wed, 05/05/2021 - 12:03
Inspection is often subject to the management team’s efforts at cost control or cost containment, as is the case with most other areas in modern manufacturing operations. Although it’s sound business judgement to maximize the value of every dollar,…
Staging for GaugingKnowing how the part is designed, and where the measurement is to be made, can be key to staging the measuring instrument
Tue, 11/10/2020 - 12:03
Before a fixture gauge is designed, the engineer must understand what specifications must be inspected. In many respects, the gauge’s design reflects not only the design of the part but also the manufacturing processes that produced it. Machinists…
