Walter Shewhart’s average and range chart had been around for more than a decade when, in 1941, W. J. Jennett came up with the chart for individual values and moving ranges (an XmR chart). The XmR is built on the same foundation as the average and range chart, but it involves two unique ideas. First, it works directly with the original data rather than averages; second, it uses the successive differences to compute the limits. These unique aspects of an XmR chart have caused more than one statistician to ask, “Can it really be that simple?”

When confronted with the simplicity created by the two unique aspects of the XmR chart, various statisticians have come up with three erroneous caveats regarding the chart.1 The first of these is, “The XmR chart requires normally distributed data.” The second is, “The XmR chart will result in too many false alarms.” And the third is, “The XmR chart will miss signals of a process change.” The contradictory nature of the last two reveals the lack of any real theoretical basis for any of these caveats.

Dr. Wheeler calls the XmR the "Swiss Army Knife" of control charts.
It's especially useful in service industries such as healthcare.
Let's stop using these excuses to avoid control charts and start using them to see what we can learn.

Don Wheeler's article on the XmR chart
Dr Wheeler's excellent description and use of the XmR chart is spot on. This is further reinforced by Jay's comment about the use of the XmR chart in healthcare settings. It is the prefect chart for studying the variation in individual patient care situations. The average length of stay (ALOS) for example is useless as improvement data. Unfortunately, the ALSO is popular in management circles and when combined with the use of red/yellow/green charts provides no foundation for understanding the variation in patient care only data for judgment.
Another Excellent Don Wheeler Article!
Another great article. I'd like to see a follow-on discussing the use of XmR charts with attributes data (counts of items, counts of events). It's not difficult to show that XmR is often the most appropriate chart for those data, and it should not be controversial. However, some otherwise very knowledgeable statisticians dismiss the idea, usually with no more justification than "it's the wrong chart for the data."
