(ThermHex: Chicago) -- Leading industry players ThermHex and Fraunhofer will open their doors for experts in the field of composite sandwich materials to discuss and explore the latest developments and applications in the construction and use of sandwich materials. Europe’s composite sandwich-material industry will also have the opportunity to get a firsthand view of their state-of-the-art facilities and production techniques.

Organised by ThermHex and Fraunhofer IMWS, the Composite-Sandwich Conference will be held in Halle (Saale), Germany, February 2–3, 2022. Although the topic of lightweight construction is widely discussed in many congresses and conferences, there are only a few conferences worldwide focusing on sandwich construction and sandwich core materials.
The conference will provide the opportunity for engineers and scientists from across the composites sector to explore new fields of application of sandwich materials and network with some of the leading minds in the sector. It will bring together experts from across the composites industry.
The construction of sandwich materials, based on fiber-reinforced plastics, enables highly efficient lightweight structures and is making an enormous contribution to resource conservation in a large number of industries. Using sustainable sandwich material e.g., in the automotive industry, reduces not only weight but also the CO2 footprint.
Composite sandwich materials are used in a variety of markets where an optimum strength-to-weight ratio is crucial. ThermHex Waben’s polypropylene lightweight sandwich panels have been used for the production of panels for truck walls, for ship interiors, prefabricated bathrooms, and modern swimming pools.
“We are very excited to be hosting together with our partners from Fraunhofer IMWS the second Composite-Sandwich Conference,” says Jochen Pflug, CEO of ThermHex. “Our work with Fraunhofer has not only resulted in the development of our Organosandwich, a thermoplastic sandwich panel with polypropylene honeycomb core, it has also led to a wide range of applications. Now this conference offers a unique opportunity for the industry to come together, explore new developments, and discover new potential applications.”
The conference will take place over two days, with the first day covering a guided tour through ThermHex Waben’s production facilities, where the participants of our conference will be able to see firsthand ThermHex’s patented, efficient process for the continuous production of honeycomb cores.
A tour around Fraunhofer’s Pilot plant Centre for Polymer Synthesis and Processing PAZ will follow. Fraunhofer PAZ performs polymer synthesis and processing procedures on an industrial scale. In the evening participants will gather in the “White House of Germany”—the Leopoldina—and are welcome to listen to a keynote from company Airbus. A joint dinner in the famous building will complete the day.
Day two consists of lectures divided into three thematic blocks: industrial applications; material properties and developments; and technologies and production processes. It will feature speakers from Ruag, Airborne, Elring Klinger, Engel, Fraunhofer IGCV, Fraunhofer IMWS, and Econcore.
There are limited places remaining. For more information, or to register for the conference, visit the Composite Sandwich Conference website.
