(Synova: Totowa, NJ) -- At the International Manufacturing and Technology Show in Chicago in September 2024, Synova, a provider of advanced laser cutting solutions, presented its Laser MicroJet Integration Package (LMJ-iP), designed to turn any standard three-axis vertical machining center into a multipurpose milling/drilling, laser-cutting machine.

The LMJ-iP is Synova’s core laser technology, consisting of standard hardware components designed for easy integration into new or existing three-axis VMC machines. The standard integration package includes everything you need to get started: cutting head, laser, fiber cable, high-pressure pump, and power meter.
Offering several component options, Synova can customize a package to meet clients’ technical and application requirements. The LMJ-iP system enables 2D cutting and shaping of hard and brittle materials such as industrial diamond or ceramic, as well as sophisticated composites used in aerospace and automotive applications. The water-jet, guided laser technology is capable of precisely machining parts made of ceramic-matrix composites (CMC, a composite made of SiC) while protecting the material from heat-related effects. The low weight and heat-resistant new material is used for hot-section aeroengine components to increase aircraft efficiency.
“The issue of heat-affected zones and microcracks is greatly reduced when using Synova’s Laser MicroJet systems because of the inherent heat dissipation properties of the water jet,” says Bernold Richerzhagen, Synova founder and CEO.
“Aerospace customers are already using our water-jet laser to cut CMC shrouds and drill cooling holes in turbine blades,” says John Ross, Synova director of operations in the U.S. “The LMJ has demonstrated the precision and reliability required for such applications.”
The LMJ “wet laser” technology cools workpieces while efficiently washing away debris. The water jet maintains the laser’s focus, creating a cylindrical laser beam that results in parallel walls and tight kerf widths.
