(Mercy Health System: Janesville, Wisconsin) -- Mercy Health System, a recipient of the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, is recognized for organizational excellence across its entire vertically integrated organization spanning three hospitals, 285 employed physicians and their offices, a homeless center, insurance company, and all other 64 entities.
Since 1989, total patient visits have increased tenfold, employees/partners have grown by more than 700 percent, and revenues have increased 2,300 percent.“Mercy Health System has implemented hundreds of quality processes and identified national benchmarks to ensure quality care for our patients. Over the last five years, Mercy has implemented performance initiatives resulting in increased patient and customer satisfaction in all of its service areas,” says Barbra Bortner, vice president of marketing and public relations,
Among these performance initiatives, Mercy increased its W2 physician partners from no full-time partner physicians in 1989, to 285 today. These physician partners are responsible for about $300 million of the system’s $833 in revenues.
Mercy currently serves more than one million patients per year, and provides over $32 million in free services and uncompensated care to the communities it serves. Current overall mortality rates match the best practice benchmark based on the Care Science (a provider of care management, clinical analysis and clinical quality improvement solutions) in the United States.
“Results for inpatient satisfaction have demonstrated consistent improvement, and in 2007 attained the 81st percentile ranking with Press Ganey while the Emergency Department satisfaction improved from the 63rd to the 84th percentile ranking,” says Bortner. “Outpatient physician clinic satisfaction has been in the top quartile of the American Group Management Association for the last three years, reaching the 81st percentile in 2007.”
“For more than 18 years, we have devoted ourselves to the pursuit of excellence using our innovative Culture of Excellence quality initiative,” says Mercy Health System president and CEO, Javon R. Bea. “This award is a testament to that initiative’s success and to the incredible dedication of our physician and employee partners.”
