It’s a cliche that the most innovative ideas come in a flash of inspiration: Archimedes in his bathtub, Newton and the apple.

But anyone whose job depends on coming up with new ideas knows that’s not entirely true, mostly because there’s no such thing as a totally novel or original idea. New ideas are often pieces of old ideas that have been adapted or combined in creative ways.

Turn Old Ideas into solutions for new Problems

This sounds like some TRIZ Principals at work.  Wonder if the Professors have been trained in the (75-Year-old) Russian TRIZ principals. The TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) principle is summarized as: "Somebody, somewhere has already solved your problem (or one very similar to it). Creativity means finding that solution and adapting it to your problem."

This principle is based on the idea that many problems and their solutions are universal and can be found across different industries and fields. By leveraging existing solutions, you can innovate more efficiently and effectively. How they can those solutions be applied at work for any industry.
