Unveiled at the company’s European headquarters in Pontardawe, the new facility is supported by the Defense Technology Exploitation Program (DTEP) and the Defense and Security Accelerator (DASA), and has been developed in collaboration with Rolls-Royce. The investment is expected to enhance domestic production of high-integrity aerospace components and improve resilience in critical U.K. supply chains.
Central to the development is one of the largest commercially available vacuum casting furnaces in the U.K., able to produce components weighing up to 200 kg in an oxygen-free environment. This enables the manufacture of ultraclean, high-performance alloys required for next-generation aerospace engines and defense applications—capabilities typically limited to major global manufacturers. By making this technology commercially accessible, the facility addresses a recognized gap in the U.K.’s advanced manufacturing landscape.
The VPIC facility also integrates advanced digital simulation and digital-twin technologies, allowing casting processes to be optimized prior to production, reducing development time, cost, and material waste. In parallel, it supports more sustainable manufacturing through the recycling of legacy aerospace materials into high-value alloys for modern applications.
The launch event on March 18, 2026, brought together representatives from industry, government, and partner organizations, reflecting the project’s national significance as well as its effects on the regional economy. Wall Colmonoy, which has operated in Pontardawe for nearly six decades, says the investment will safeguard skilled jobs while creating new opportunities in advanced engineering.
Rob Davies, Wall Colmonoy managing director, says, “This investment represents a significant step forward for our U.K. operations and for the wider manufacturing sector. The VPIC facility enables us to deliver advanced aerospace and defense components while strengthening critical capability within the U.K.”
With a vigorous development program already in place, the facility is expected to play a key role in supporting aerospace, defense, and other high-integrity sectors in the coming years.
