ANSI, ABNT Propose ISO Biofuels Subcommittee

Published: Monday, July 30, 2007 - 22:00

(ANSI: New York) -- The increasing number of liquid biofuels standards initiatives and the growing market demand for alternative energy sources are fueling the need for the harmonization of standards and test methods to support the commoditization of liquid biofuels throughout the supply chain.

To answer this need, the American National Standards Institute and the Brazilian association of technical standards regulator, ABNT, have issued a joint proposal for a new International Organization for Standardization field of activity in the area of liquid biofuels.

Prior to formal submittal to ISO, the proposal is undergoing national consultations within ANSI and ABNT. All interested stakeholders are invited to submit comments. Within the United States, the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO TC 28 will be responsible for compiling comments and determining if any changes are necessary.

The proposal recommends the creation of a new subcommittee within ISO Technical Committee 28—“Petroleum products and lubricants,” a group which has developed more than two hundred international specifications, test methods, and standards for liquid fuels. ISO TC 28 also has well-established working relationships with the European Committee for Normalization’s TC 19—“Gaseous and liquid fuels, lubricants and related products of petroleum, synthetic and biological origin,” which has been active in standardization efforts in this area.

The scope of the ISO TC 28 subcommittee would span terminology, classification, and specifications for liquid biofuels, as well as analysis and testing for pure liquid biofuels. Initially, the subcommittee would be structured with two working groups: one to address ethanol, the other biodiesel.
