(Pyzdek Institute: Tuscon, AZ) -- Tom Pyzdek will use a fun audience-participation demonstration to show that when managers and leaders don’t understand variation, their decisions and actions are dangerously off of the mark. Some of the bad things that happen include making problems worse instead of better; ignoring real issues; creating fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) among employees; and, occasionally, making a fool of yourself. The event will take place May 18, 2011, in Tucson, Arizona.

The red bead experiment was made famous by quality pioneer W. Edwards Deming. Pyzdek was privileged to be able to train with Deming and to assist him during his four-day seminars during the 1980s. Although this demonstration is light and fun, it illustrates the critical importance of understanding variation to managers and business leaders.
The meeting is co-sponsored by APICS, The Association for Operations Management, the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and the National Association of Credit Management (NACM).
