The Society of Manufacturing Engineers recognized several of its members for their achievements in manufacturing, education, science and technology at its annual awards banquet in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 11.
“We are pleased to honor the considerable contributions of these manufacturing leaders to advance manufacturing excellence worldwide,” says Richard C. Peters, SME president. “Their ingenuity in learning new ways to manufacture, leading technological innovation and implementing lean strategies will help secure the future of manufacturing.”
The following SME members received the awards:
- SME Gold Medal--Anatoly P. Babichev. Babichev receives the award for his outstanding service to the manufacturing engineering industry, particularly in the field of vibrational technology. He is a professor of technical services at Don State Technical University, Rostov-on-Don, Russia.
- Eli Whitney Productivity Award--Arden L. Bement J. Bement is the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (a post he was appointed to by President Bush) and acting director of the National Science Foundation. Bement is the David A. Ross Distinguished Professor of Nuclear Engineering and head of the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University.
- Donald C. Burnham Manufacturing Management Award--Tom Burbage. Burbage is the executive vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Joint Strike Fighter Program. He is recognized for his success in the integration of infrastructure and process manufacturing through innovative uses of human, technical and financial resources.
- SME Frederick W. Taylor Research Medal--David A. Dornfeld. Dornfeld is the Will C. Hall Family Professor of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. He’s a leader in novel sensors for manufacturing processing and has conducted considerable research in acoustic emission, burr formation, sensor fusion and precision engineering.
- SME Albert M. Sargent Progress Award--Francesco Jovane. Jovane is a senior manufacturing professor and director at the Industrial Technology and Automation Institute Technical University in Milan, Italy. His technical contributions and managerial leadership have resulted in the development of new products, processes and intelligent manufacturing systems that have significantly impacted the small- and medium-sized companies that dominate the Italian economy.
- SME Education Award--J.T.Black. Black is a professor emeritus of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University. He’s devoted more than 40 years to manufacturing education, and has authored more than 70 technical publications and several books on manufacturing processes.
- Joseph A. Siegel Service Award--Louis M. Papp. Papp is the president of Manufacturing Advisory Services in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He is recognized for his years of dedication to the SME.
