3D-printed car to cross the U.S. on 10 gallons of fuel

Drive from San Francisco to New York in a 3D-printed car using just 10 gallons of biofuel. Not crazy and not science fiction. It’s the 2015 goal for Jim Kor and the team at Winnipeg, Manitoba-based KOR Ecologic. You may have heard about the company back in 2010 when its Urbee 1 (short for Urban electric) 3D-printed car made the news... tech news, anyway.

The latest incarnation of the Urbee is the Urbee 2, a two-passenger vehicle with a bit of storage in the back, about the same room as the original Honda Insight. The Urbee 2 is a parallel/series hybrid employing electric motors to drive the front wheels and a small, 4-cycle diesel (5 hp at 2,200 rpm) to charge the batteries or supply power to the front wheels. Weighing just 1,700 lb and with a coefficient of drag of only 0.15, Urbee 2 should be able to get about 290 miles per gallon, according to computer modeling.

This is amazing

It also looks like there is zero material waste, because 3D printing uses all the material.
