(Cogiscan Inc.: Bromont, Quebec) In collaboration with strategic partners, Fuji, Juki, and Siemens, Cogiscan Inc., introduced its RFID Smart Reel Detection system at Productronica, in Munich, Germany. The development project, announced earlier this year, uses RFID technology on reels of electronic components to complement the use of traditional barcode labels during electronic manufacturing assembly. The “Smart Reel” eliminates the manual scanning of reels by being automatically associated with feeders in a machine, offline set-up area, or storage location.

Cogiscan’s Smart Reel is part of an ongoing effort to define a future industry standard for RFID-based technology, aimed at reducing human errors and improving traceability.  “The system eliminates the manual intervention required to track and trace components in the manufacturing process, and therefore removes the potential for operator error,” says André Corriveau, Cogiscan’s co-president of product development.
