Nikon Instruments Inc. will accept submissions for its annual International Small World Competition until June 30, the company recently announced. The competition is open to all microscopists and showcases photographic excellence in the art and science of photomicrography. The images depict a fascinating and rarely seen miniature universe, and many depict symbols of newly emerging industries like nanotechnology. Winning images frequently highlight promising scientific material and point to new trends emerging from the convergence of science, biology and technology. Last year, Nikon received more than 1,500 submissions from more than 50 countries.
Contestants can enter a maximum of three images, which are judged for their originality, informational content, technical proficiency and visual strength. The competition is open to all types of light microscopy and there are no restrictions to the type of specimens or techniques used. The first and second of 20 prize winners will receive a selection of Nikon products and equipment worth $3,000 and $2,000, respectively. The winners will be selected in mid-summer.
