Published: Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 22:00 CVS/pharmacy recently donated $2.1 million to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Therapy Alliance in support of new research initiatives into the disease. CVS—the largest retail pharmacy chain in the U.S.—raised the money through a customer-donation campaign held in stores during June. Since the campaign’s inception in 2002, the pharmacy has raised nearly $8 million for ALS research. The money has allowed the formation of a laboratory that’s focused on ALS genetics research at the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease, as well as an international ALS genetics initiative. The ALS Therapy Alliance includes researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Boston University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, among other organizations from all over the world. Collectively, 30 ALS researchers are involved under the ALS Therapy Alliance, using funding directly from CVS/pharmacy.
