Howard Yoon

Physicist, researcher, and author

Howard Yoon, a physicist, researcher, and author, at NIST’s Optical Radiation Group has spent 25 years thinking about how to measure light more accurately. Yoon’s work improves standards that make it possible to use light as a measurement tool. His favorite light wavelength is 650 nanometers, the wavelength historically used for optically determining the temperatures of metals. Yoon earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in physics from University of Illinois, and bachelor’s degrees in physics and chemistry from Swathmore College. Visit the NIST Publication Portal for more than 100 published manuscripts that Yoon has co-authored.

Lighting the Way Toward Better MeasurementsThe power of light is truly illuminating

As a physicist who explores ways to measure light more accurately, it should come as no surprise that I’m fascinated by even common optical phenomena that we see all around us (e.g., rainbows or oil slicks on butterfly wings). Rainbows occur…
