The International Organization of Standardization recently created the ISO Award for Higher Education in Standardization, which will be presented for the first time at the ISO General Assembly in Geneva in September.

The award is designed to support institutions that have developed and implemented successful programs related to standardization as a tool to access world markets, transfer technology, and promote good business practices and sustainable development. Nominations for candidates are due to ISO by Feb. 15. Judges for the award will include eminent international professionals from academia, the economic sphere and the media.

“Knowledge of the economic, technical and social importance and benefits of standards is becoming imperative in the curricula of future managers, scientists and technologists,” says Alan Bryden, ISO secretary-general. “Many universities and other higher education institutions have begun introducing their students to standardization. ISO is keen to support them in their efforts and to encourage them to share their knowledge, experience and expertise with other educational establishments.”

Award winners will receive 15,000 Swiss francs (US$12,136.50) and a certificate of appreciation. The award is co-sponsored by ISO and the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee.
