The Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the Association for Manufacturing Excellence
recently made a popular book a required reading for those seeking certification
as lean manufacturing experts.

Lean Transformation: How to Change Your Business into a Lean Enterprise, (Oaklea Press, 1999) by Jorge Larco and Bruce Henderson, has sold 50,000 copies in print, making it one of the most widely read books on lean principles. It has been translated into half a dozen languages, including Russian, Chinese, German and Italian.

SME and the AME developed the new joint lean-certification program in conjunction with the Shingo Prize. The certification is one of the manufacturing industry’s few nationally recognized programs. It’ll evaluate candidates at several levels based on their portfolios of experience and will require mentoring and examinations.
