Each year on Oct. 14, the members of the International Electrotechnical Commission, International Organization for Standardization and International Telecommunication Union celebrate World Standards Day.

This year’s theme is “Standards for a Safer World.” Renzo Tani, president of the IEC, Yoshio Utsumi, secretary-general of the ITU, and Masami Tanaka, ISO president, signed a joint declaration to commemorate the event, pointing out that standards break down technical barriers to international trade. “Standards developed at the international level through IEC, ISO and ITU are available for use at the national and regional levels to meet the needs of society at large, the market and government regulators,” reads the declaration.

The American National Standards Institute hosted a celebration in Washington on Oct. 6 to commemorate the event. For more information, visit www.iso.org or www.ansi.org.
