The Associated Press recently reported that a committee in Montana’s state legislature is working toward defining quality in education. The initiative is part of a larger effort to change the state’s school funding process. Following the unanimous vote to begin the process, the measure will next be debated in the state legislature. The bill would require a quality system to handle the needs of disabled and gifted children and provide equipment, textbooks and student transportation. Schools would also be required to meet state accreditation standards and to teach students about American Indian culture. The legislation is widely considered to be an answer to the state’s Supreme Court declaration that its current educational system is unconstitutional.
