If you are familiar with the technical concept of the Internet of Things (IoT), you already understand the impact this technological sea change will have on manufacturing. However, plenty of hype still surrounds the spread of IoT in manufacturing from a worldwide perspective, so here are the key aspects of how quality management links to IoT.

A working definition of IoT for quality management

IoT describes the massive adoption of integrating previously “dumb” devices, remote sensors, and machines into a smart, interconnected network of linked devices via the web. You can imagine the continued adoption of RFID in logistics and the data created by its wide deployment as one example, but IoT involves more than just RFID. It’s the integration of web-enabled sensors, machines, and newly created software systems that define IoT in a manufacturing context.
