Seeking to promote eco-friendly practices among its suppliers and reduce incoming component inventory, Samsung India recently tightened its vendor compliance regulations and started a Six Sigma program. Dubbed “Together Win through Six Sigma” (TWIN), the program aims to improve vendor productivity by 30 percent and reduce vendor defect ratios by more than 20 percent. The company will also require all vendor facilities to be registered to ISO 14001. Samsung India’s 20 Black Belts are leading the projects and working with vendors to ensure compliance. The company has 150 vendors.
“Starting this month, all the components supplied to the Samsung India factory need to be certified by SGS, Gurgaon as per ROHS guidelines,” says a company spokesperson. “Components supplied by our vendors will be free of lead, cadmium, mercury and chromium. … As a result of this, we will get better-quality components and can successfully implement just-in-time for incoming components, thereby reducing the incoming component inventory significantly.”
