During the Great Recession of December 2007—June 2009, employment and production in the manufacturing industry declined sharply. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, during the 24-month period between December 2007 and December 2009, the manufacturing industry lost 2 million employees or 15 percent of its workforce. But there are brighter days ahead.
