(SAE International: Warrendale, PA) -- From a modest beginning in a handful of classrooms in 1991, SAE International’s award-winning, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education program, A World in Motion (AWIM), celebrates its 20th anniversary, having touched the lives of millions of school students.

“AWIM not only helps SAE International fulfill its mission to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists, but it does so in spectacular fashion,” says David L. Schutt, CEO of SAE International. “At a time when introducing students to hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, and math is critical, AWIM is leading the way in classrooms across North America and around the globe.”

AWIM offers interdisciplinary, project-based learning to students in kindergarten through high school. With 10 interactive curricula or challenges, AWIM allows students to participate in an “engineering design experience”—a problem-solving process taught at many engineering schools and used by engineering design teams working in the field. Challenges include designing and constructing a JetToy, Simmer, or Gravity Cruiser, and more sophisticated fuel cell, electronic, and motorized cars.
