(Ophir-Spiricon: Logan, UT) -- Ophir-Spiricon, a global provider of precision laser measurement, recently announced the PD10-IR-pJ Photodiode Energy Sensors, designed to measure very low energy down to 30 pJ. Part of the PD10 family of high sensitivity silicon laser sensors, the new devices extend the low measurement capability to the near infrared (NIR) range, covering from 800 to 1,800 nm.

The PD10-IR-pJ energy sensor is able to measure very low energies, either single shot, or repetitive, up to 10 kHz. The device uses a 5 mm-aperture germanium photodiode to measure pulse energies in 200 pJ to 20 nJ range, with the lowest possible energy measurement as small as 30 pJ. The PD10-IR-pJ energy sensors are designed for commercial and military applications, such as telecommunications and remote sensing.

“Measuring at the picojoule level has been difficult until now," notes Ephraim Greenfield, vice president of engineering for the Laser Measurement Group at Ophir-Spiricon. “The PD10-IR-pJ brings infrared laser measurement down to significantly smaller, more sensitive levels, jumping from 200 nJ down to 30 pJ, a 10,000 time improvement.”
