(Olympus Corp.: Tokyo) -- Olympus Corp. will commence international sales of the 38DL PLUS ultrasonic thickness gauge. This new nondestructive testing device allows objects to be inspected without the need for destruction or disassembly. The gauge will go on sale in Japan in fall 2010.

An ultrasonic thickness gauge determines an object’s thickness by emitting ultrasonic waves and measuring the time required for them to bounce back. They aid quality inspections of products made from plastic, metals, glass, composites, and other materials. These gauges are also used to measure the remaining wall thickness of internally corroded pipes and tanks.
Existing thickness gauges manufactured by Olympus have been configured for a specific range of applications, which means that a different gauge was required for each type of inspection. With the 38DL PLUS, users can configure this single device to carry out a variety of inspection tasks by purchasing software options for additional capabilities, such as precision thickness measurement at resolutions of up to 0.001 mm, or the ability to take simultaneous thickness readings of individual layers in multilayered materials. Because the 38DL PLUS is designed to meet various durability standards, including the IP67 waterproofing standard, it can be used with confidence in extreme weather conditions and under harsh site conditions.
38DL PLUS features
The gauge offers all-in-one-model support for multiple inspection applications. Additional capabilities can be added to the 38DL’s standard functions by purchasing software licenses. The task-specific software can configure the 38DL to carry out a variety of inspections that would have required four different models from the existing Olympus range. Code-activated software options include:
Oxidation scale measurement. This feature allows the 38DL to measure oxidation scale on the inside of boiler tubes.
High-resolution display. This feature increases the display resolution from the standard 0.01 mm level to 0.001 mm.
Multilayer measurement. With this option, the 38DL can be used to measure the thickness of multilayered materials, such as preforms for PET bottles and plastic fuel tanks.
High penetration. This feature configures the gauge to transmit low-frequency waves, allowing it to measure materials that are normally unsuitable for ultrasonic measurements, such as very thick layers of rubber and fiberglass.
The durable 38DL PLUS is designed to meet the IP67 waterproofing standard and U.S. Department of Defense standards, including those for shock and dropping tests. The gauge will perform reliably under various weather conditions and in harsh environments.
Measurement data can be stored and managed in the gauge’s internal data logger. It had the capacity to store 475,000 thickness readings or 20,000 waveforms. Data can also be stored in text or comma-separated value (CSV) formats on standard micro secure digitial (SD) cards.
