Hexagon’s Reverse Engineering Solution, Recreate, Debuted at RAPID + TCT 2021

Designed to reduce complexity and increase flexibility in design workflow

Published: Tuesday, October 19, 2021 - 11:00

(Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence: North Kingstown, RI) -- Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division announced the North American debut of REcreate, a new reverse engineering software solution at RAPID + TCT 2021.

RAPID attendees got the first look at REcreate and its smarter, faster approach to creating 3D models in a design and production environment tailor-made to create new product designs and repair or replace parts. Attendees saw REcreate working in a real-world scenario in tandem with an Absolute Arm and AS1 scanning system to capture 3D part data. The solution can also import mesh, solid, surface, or point cloud data, giving the user more design flexibility to start at any entry point in the reverse engineering process. Hexagon reverse engineering experts were on hand to demonstrate and answer questions about features and individual design challenges.

Hexagon subject matter expert Giles Gaskell delivered a presentation entitled “Empowering Quality Control and Inspection at Every Level with 3D Scanning.” Gaskell also served as the host, moderator, and participant in the RAPID Thought Leadership Panel forum entitled “3D Scanning—Why Do It and How.” The panel was made up of 3D scanning veterans with expertise in using scanners for reverse engineering and inspection. Gaskell presented various scanning topics and workshops to a broad range of novice to expert users to expand their knowledge of data acquisition, reverse engineering, and additive manufacturing technologies.

“We were excited to debut REcreate at RAPID + TCT this year,” states Ken Woodbine, senior portfolio manager, metrology software. “With decades of expertise in 3D scanning and data capture, our goal was to build a new reverse engineering software application focused on ease of use to handle dense point clouds from scanning devices, along with the ability to verify and design models in a single, robust CAD environment. Interoperability was also at the top of our list. REcreate works with a wide range of third-party systems and data capture devices. The software program can be used as an end-to-end reverse engineering solution, or as a complement to existing technology. It is the modern answer to the ever evolving need to design and manufacture parts quickly and accurately.”

REcreate was built from the ground up to remove the complexity involved in building airtight models for additive or subtractive manufacturing. Original equipment manufacturers and design engineers can reconstruct legacy parts and develop new innovative products from existing parts or hand-built prototypes. REcreate is also a critical tool for ensuring a precision fit in a design envelope for new or aftermarket components. In essence, the software can import scan data to create CAD models for parts that had no affiliated CAD model. REcreate users can also easily update CAD models to reflect changes that occurred in the manufacturing or prototyping process.
