ChamberCam Measures Components Under Extreme Climatic Conditions

Enables users to obtain optical 3-D thermal expansion and displacement data

(DIS: Clinton Township, MI) -- Dynamic Intelligent Solutions (DIS) recently outfitted an automotive customer’s paint bake oven with ChamberCam, allowing the customer to obtain optical 3-D thermal expansion and displacement data of an aluminum roof while attached to a full-body vehicle during the test. This testing replicates the production environment when a vehicle body-in-white moves through the paint baking process. With temperatures reaching upwards of 200°C (392°F) or higher, the test proved to be an invaluable process to understand thermal expansion between different materials (e.g., aluminum vs. steel).

“With vehicle requirements pushing for better gas mileage, lighter structural materials are being used to reach those goals,” says Phillip Lewis, technical engineering manager at DIS. “However, using lighter materials requires an understanding of that material’s dimensional stability throughout different environmental conditions. With ChamberCam, developers and engineers, for the first time, can see and measure how these materials respond during exposure to extreme environmental conditions.”

Measuring the dimensional stability of components under extreme climatic conditions using ChamberCam increases efficiency, and reduces development time and cost.
