Protecting Food Quality in the Wake of the Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

The recent multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis is a powerful reminder that food quality involves more than appearance, consistency, and shelf life. It requires an integrated approach to food safety, supplier control, traceability, risk management, and continuous improvement.

By mid-July 2026, federal and state authorities were investigating an outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at certain restaurant locations. The investigation included 1,644 reported illnesses in five states, 94 hospitalizations, and no reported deaths. Traceback efforts converged on a supplier in Mexico, prompting a recall and the removal of implicated lettuce from the market. The investigation remains ongoing, and regulators have cautioned that its scope could change as new information becomes available.

Don't allow the defect in the first place.

Quality Management is ideally about stopping defects where they occur, rather than catching them after the fact. Fecal-oral contamination of lettuce has a very clear root cause which lies far upstream of any QMS. I hope to God that these companies are not spending their time hemming and hawing about automated systems instead of focusing on the hygiene and handwashing practices of agricultural workers.
