Book: Quality Management—Theory and Application

New book establishes quality as a key element of management practices.

Published: Tuesday, December 22, 2009 - 12:40

(CRC Press: New York) -- In Quality Management: Theory and Application (CRC Press, 2009), author Peter D. Mauch, Ph. D., demonstrates the necessity of quality as a sustained management activity.

Divided into five sections, the book covers staffing, motivation, control, planning, and organization. It offers quality management practices and discusses the effect of managing for quality throughout an organization.

The book addresses the alignment of individual departments to maximize quality, business planning and success metrics, record keeping, and department level quality control implementation and deviations. In addition, the book:

  • Combines the technical aspects of quality engineering with successful business management practices
  • Demonstrates how achieving quality practices is ongoing throughout an organization and not the responsibility of one department
  • Uses examples from actual situations demonstrating principles that can be readily applied in any industrial situation
  • Presents techniques and management strategies that are applicable across all industries
  • Is the first book that actually shows how to manage quality in a practical and applied way

Peter D. Mauch is the president of Mauch & Associates, Quality Engineering Services, in Burr Ridge, Illinois. His experience in total quality program development and education spans a wide range of industries, including electronics, telecommunications, consumer electronics, data processing, and plastics.

He holds a doctorate degree in total quality management; a master of science in management; and bachelor’s degrees in applied behavioral science, data processing, and business management; along with diplomas in calibration and electronic technology. In addition, he is an ASQC-certified quality engineer, quality auditor, and is QAI-certified in quality analysis.

Mauch is an international lecturer on total quality management and he teaches courses in all aspects of quality assurance in seminars and at Triton College, Oakton Community College, and College of DuPage, in Northern Illinois. He also serves as an advisor on quality curriculum development at Triton College. He also serves as a member of ANSI-accredited U.S. TAG to the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee 176 (ISO/TC 176) Quality Management and Quality Assurance, for revising the standard, ISO 9004—“Managing for the sustained success of an organization—A quality management approach.” He is the author of three books, A Basic Approach to Quality Control and SPC (iUniverse, 2009); The 90-Day ISO Manual Implementation Guide, co-authored by James R. Stewart and Frank Straka (St. Lucie Press, 1994); and Basic SPC: A Primer for the Service Industries (Quality Press, 1991).
