Hexagon GD&T Class for PC-DMIS Users

This class was designed specifically for PC-DMIS users by PC-DMIS instructors, and provides both a complete overview of the GD&T Y14.5 standard and practical application of those standards to the XactMeasure GD&T function of PC-DMIS.

This class focuses on practical, real-word examples from everyday metrology use, and techniques for successful application of the standards using PC-DMIS metrology software. All GD&T symbols and modifiers are discussed, as well as the application of how modifiers are applied in PC-DMIS in single segment and composite feature control frames. This three day course is for PC-DMIS users of all levels, and prior GD&T coursework is not required.

Scanning: Visible Productivity
Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology shows the productivity of Active Scanning for better measurement results.
Analyzing Data: Using the Minitab Assistant
Minitab 16 offers new functionality and features. The most prominent is the Assistant, a menu-based tool designed to guide users through their analyses and help them interpret their results with confidence. The new Assistant feature opens the door to statistical analysis for more people, so everyone engaged in quality improvement efforts throughout an organization can make more effective use of their data to make the best decisions.
CMSC 2010

Join the Coordinate Metrology Society in Reno, July 12–16, at the spacious Grand Sierra Resort for the 26th annual Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC).

Rather than focusing on sales, as do most trade shows, this unique event for 3-D coordinate metrology focuses on technical education, yet showcases the latest in cutting-edge portable coordinate metrology systems, software, and supporting hardware throughout 30,000 square feet of exhibition space.

For more information on the CMSC plus tour and recreation information (e.g., multiple social events in which to interact and network with the “Who’s Who” of the metrology world), visit www.cmsc.org/cmsc-attendee-information.

3-D Scanning and Modeling of Electric Vehicle

GKS scanning engineers scanned the entire Sunrise electric car body, chassis, and components (rather than an assembly) to create a viable CAD model. Since the car didn’t exist as an assembly, GKS could not create a reference scan from which the modelers could create the parts as perfectly matched components. However, they could use the available parts to create a smooth, symmetrical model and remove the handmade errors so everything could fit together correctly. Some items, such as the doors, would be mirrored to ensure symmetry. Having a CAD model would enable the MIT design team to create their desired changes quickly.

Technorazzi Live: Leica AT401 Absolute Tracker Demo

Video demonstration of Hexagon Metrology's latest absolute tracker, the Leica Absolute Tracker AT401. Weighing only 17.6 pounds, including the controller, and measuring just over 11 inches tall, the unit in its case will fit in an airplane's overhead luggage bin.

The Leica AT401 has the largest measurement volume of any laser tracker. The sensor provides a certified radial range of 80 meters and a working range of 160 meters (160 m and 320 m diameters, respectively). Coupled with an unrestricted vertical measurement dome of 290º (+/-145º), the result is a tracker with more than twice the measuring volume of conventional trackers. Setting new standards for ADM accuracy, the absolute distance meter (ADM) in the AT401 has a maximum uncertainty of just 10 microns (0.00039 in) over the full certified volume.

In this demo we measure a large aerospace tool at Coast Aerospace Manufacturing in Southern California. Coast is an award winning aerospace manufacturing company whose clients include Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed, Bell Helicopter, NASA, and more.

MarSurf XCR 20 Demonstration

Demonstration of MarSurf XCR 20 measuring a piston.

The new generation of combined roughness and contour measurement systems. The MarSurf XCR 20 is ideal for combining contour and roughness depth evaluation. The roughness software and contour software each have their own user interface. MarSurf XCR 20 is Mahr's top surface measurement system and enables even semi-automated operating sequences such as measuring stand positioning (ST 750 CNC) to be performed with ease.

Profiles in Quality: Grace Duffy on H1N1 Vaccination Program

An interview with Grace Duffy, Public health expert for the American Society for Quality and coauthor of The Public Health Quality Improvement Handbook, along with Ron Bialek and John Moran.

Duffy discusses how quality improvement tools were used as part of the H1N1 vaccination program.

This interview was recorded at the 2009 Quality Expo, prior to passage of the latest federal health care legislation.

Technorazzi: Introduction to Laser Trackers

Many industries must precisely measure the three-dimensional features of large objects. An increasingly popular way to do this is with a laser tracker, which measures 3-D coordinates by tracking a laser beam to a retroreflective target held in contact with the object of interest.

Laser trackers replace conventional tools such as tape measures, piano wire, plumb bobs, and even theodolites—they are a more accurate and reliable tool that allow you to streamline your processes and gain confidence in your measurement results.

Laser trackers are typically used in applications such as alignment, machine installation, component inspect, tool building and setup, and reverse engineering.

In this demonstration you will learn about laser tracker technology, and see how it can be used in different applications.
