Mark W. Hurwitz, president and chief executive officer of the American National Standards Institute, will retire from the organization at the end of the year. Hurwitz, 64, was appointed to the post in 1999. He cited his desire to spend more time with his family, and their plans to move from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area as the reason for his retirement.
“The presidency of ANSI has been the capstone of my professional career,” he said in a statement. “This was a very difficult decision.”
Speaking on behalf of ANSI’s board of directors, Dr. George W. Arnold, chairman of the board, praised Hurwitz’s leadership. “His vision and management skills have significantly strengthened the institute and benefited its stakeholders,” Arnold said. “As a result of his efforts, the United States has expanded its leadership and influence in the international standards and conformity assessment community. He has strengthened our partnership with government, expanded consumer participation in standards-setting and placed the institute on solid financial footing.”
ANSI is organizing a search committee to hire a successor for Hurwitz. For more information, visit www.ansi.org.
