Book: “5S for Healthcare”

A how-to guide for use of 5S in health care

(Productivity Press: New York) --  The new book, 5S for Healthcare, by Thomas L. Jackson (Productivity Press, 2009), based on Hiroyuki Hirano’s classic 5 Pillars of the Visual Workplace: The Sourcebook for 5S Implementation (Productivity Press, 1995) and modeled after Productivity Press books in the Shopfloor Series, adopts a proven reader-friendly format to impart all the information needed to understand and implement this essential lean methodology. It provides examples and case studies based on the experiences of the principals involved with the Rona Consulting Group, who were responsible for the groundbreaking implementation of the Toyota Production System at the Virginia Mason Medical Center.

While there are a growing number of books based on the Toyota Production System, or lean, focused on health care, there are very few that detail the tools that make lean more than just a way of thinking and that put the methodology into practice.

Written to readily assist with hands-on implementation efforts, this volume offers innovative features designed to improve understanding and support application. This includes helpful how-to steps and practical examples taken directly from the health care industry.

This is the first book in the new Lean Tools for Health Care series from Productivity Press. Subsequent books will cover kaizen events, mistake proofing, standard work, and just-in-time.

Author, Thomas L. Jackson, Ph. D.,  is a partner in the Rona Consulting Group, where he and Mike Rona are “transforming health care and pursuing perfection.” Jackson is a former CEO of Productivity Inc., Productivity Press, and a member of the influential Ford Lean Advisory Group. He specializes in leadership development, hoshin planning, and large-scale lean conversions. In the past 14 years he has worked with management and shop floor teams all over the world. His client list includes Ford, Nissan, Lockheed Martin, Otis Elevator, Xerox, Air Products and Chemicals, National Semiconductor, Associated Spring, Nestle, Hewlett-Packard, Whirlpool, Emerson, BHP Steel, Lear Corp., and adidas-Salomon.

Jackson holds a juris doctorate degree in commercial and tax law, and a doctorate and a master of business administration in business economics and international business, all from Indiana University. He is the author of two books on hoshin kanri and in 2007 was awarded a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award for his book, Hoshin Kanri for the Lean Enterprise: Developing Competitive Capabilities and Managing Profit (Productivity Press, 2006).
