We Have a Crisis in Leadership

Moving toward a we-centric organization

Why is employee engagement at an all-time low? Why is turnover as high as it is? Why are employees constantly looking for better opportunities?

Think about those questions, along with what I wrote in my column, “Employee Engagement: A Confluence of Passion and Purpose”: “...engagement comes from within the employee, and yet the company has a role in it, as well. When there's some confluence of 1) emotions, commitment, passion, and sense of ownership on the part of the employee about the brand; and 2) what the organization does (mission, purpose, brand promise) to facilitate and enhance those emotions or that commitment—then we have employee engagement.”

Do they make you wonder where your company has gone wrong? And, by “company,” I mean the leadership of the company. So let’s talk about leadership.

More Points for management

Most companies these days work in the opposite direction to what they should be doing:

  1. Break down barriers between staff areas.
  2. Eliminate slogans, exhortations and targets for the workforce.
  3. Eliminate numerical quotas for the workforce and numerical goals for management.
  4. Remove barriers that rob people of pride of workmanship, and eliminate the annual rating or merit system.
  5. Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement for everyone.
