The seminars will focus on the latest global issues concerning food safety, including the impact of the new U.S. Food Safety Modernization Act on EU exporters and laboratories, and an update on European Food Safety Authority risk-assessment activities. The seminars will also address recent food-safety developments regarding residue and contamination regulations, as well as method development and validation priorities from the perspective of EU reference laboratories. Other issues covered during the seminars include challenges in food packaging analysis, managing data, targeted screening for persistent organic pollutants in food, challenges in organic and inorganic elemental analysis, and marine biotoxins. Dr. John Gilbert, former science director of Fera (Food and Environment Research Agency) Central Science Laboratory, will lead the sessions. Gilbert is now managing director of FoodLife International, an organization dedicated to improving the safety of food through research, consulting, and training. The seminars are aimed at professionals in the food safety industry, from instrument operators and method developers to chemists and food scientists. In addition to learning about industry developments and new applications, participants will network with fellow professionals, ask questions, and share experiences during a general discussion with experts. “Thermo Fisher Scientific is committed to monitoring and helping respond to emerging food-safety trends and crises,” says Gerry Broski, food safety marketing director at Thermo Fisher Scientific. “As the only scientific provider with a dedicated food safety response center, we understand the needs of food producers, independent testing labs, and researchers, especially issues surrounding performance, cost-per-sample, and efficiency.
