Leica Geosystems, an advanced metrology supplier, recently received the prestigious Imaging Solution of the Year award from Advanced Imaging magazine. The award was in recognition of Leica’s innovative LR200 noncontact scanner, which was used by Leica, MAGLEV Inc. and MetricVision to produce a detailed 3-D model of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton. Leica’s LR200 scanner is the first noncontact measurement device to combine radar, laser and 3-D technologies.

To measure the dinosaur, a pair of networked LR200 scanners were positioned around the perimeter to produce accurate data sets. The device precisely measures large objects with scan rates up to 1,000 points per second at volumes up to 120 m, which accuracy of up to 10 µm. The end result is the most accurate digital model of the 17-ft dinosaur ever produced.

Advanced Imaging magazine chose the winning solutions based on the uniqueness of the challenges posed and the innovations involved in solving them. This was the ninth year the magazine has presented the awards.
