Superior Tool LLC, a small contract manufacturer located in Maple Grove, Minnesota, provides high-precision gaging and tooling to computer hardware and medical device leaders such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Medtronic.

To meet the increasingly demanding specifications of its high-precision customers, Superior Tool purchased a Carl Zeiss Prismo VAST (Variable Accuracy and Speed Probing Technology) coordinate measuring machine. The Prismo's combination of high data density and high-speed scanning was just the answer the high- precision tooling manufacturer needed to satisfy customers whose product designs reflect what can be done on today's machine tools.

CMM Boosts Aerospace Supplier's Quality and Productivity
Giddings & Lewis Sheffield Measurement Discovery CMM

Enginetics Corp., a Dayton, Ohio, aerospace company, recently found a way to improve its product quality while increasing worker productivity by installing a new Giddings & Lewis Sheffield Measurement Discovery CMM.

Enginetics produces a diverse mix of aerospace engine components from exotic materials, including titanium and inconel alloys. "We pride ourselves on being able to machine the tough stuff," says Alan Cain, machining division manager for Enginetics. "This requires a great deal of attention from our operators during the machining process." Ordinary materials, such as brass, aluminum and mild steel, require less operator intervention to maintain tolerances. Exotic materials, however, challenge operators to continually compensate for variables, such as cutter wear and work hardening of the material.
