Automated Inspection System Yields Quick Payback

Determined to stay in the running despite the aggressive competitive pricing that caused several contract electronics manufacturers to close their doors, Newonics Inc., a leading Utah contract manufacturer, installed CR Technology's new RTI-6500 automated vision inspection system. With the RTI-6500, Newonics has enhanced its product quality and sales while reducing production costs.

"Due to the variety of printed circuit board assemblies our inspectors review on any given day, an automated optical inspection system was essential," explains Doug McPhie, vice president of Newonics. "CR Technology's RTI 6500 system eliminates inspector error and ensures our customers a greater level of quality."

The RTI 6500 is configured to allow quick and accurate inspection of large printed circuit boards with typical scan times of 800 parts per minute. Its four high-resolution cameras allow for quick solder inspection and verification of part installation, which reduces the cost of correcting defects. "The speed and flexibility of the system allow us to compete with today's fast production flows," says McPhie. "Plus, we've justified the cost directly from our improved manufacturing efficiency. Overall, CR Technology's system has helped increase our business by 50 percent."

The RTI-6500's standard features include quick self-learning programmability; an easy-to-use, password-protected Windows NT operator interface; fast, accurate and repeatable scans; a self-learning feature that extracts part information from CAD pick-and-place files; and the ability to step through a known good board.

Newonics needed an advanced automated inspection system that would meet customer requirements and add value to their business to compete effectively in its market, notes McPhie. "The RTI-6500 was chosen for its inspection accuracy and for offering the fastest payback of any system on the market," he says.
