Hexagon Acquires Vision Manufacturer Mycrona GmbH

(Hexagon Metrology: London) -- Following on its recent acquisition of Mahr Multisensor and further expanding its already large footprint in the international metrology market, Hexagon has recently acquired all outstanding assets and intellectual property of Mycrona GmbH, a manufacturer of state-of-the-art 3-D multisensor coordinate measuring machines.

The Mahr and Mycrona acquisitions will further enhance Hexagon’s worldwide product offering in multisensor vision technology, according to Ola Rollén, CEO and president of Hexagon AB.

“With these acquisitions, Hexagon covers all aspects of the multisensor market from fairly simple low-end systems already established via Hexagon’s subsidiary Tesa, to the advanced automated systems that Mahr and Mycrona represents,” explains Rollén. “It also opens up the door to the nano segment of the measurement technology industry.”

The growing demand for 3-D feature recognition using optical, white light, and noncontact scanning probes spurred Hexagon’s acquisitions, according to a company press release. Faster throughput and delicate parts have created a growing need for flexible equipment with multiple sensors for measuring a variety of features in one setup. This is a high-growth area within the metrology market and the targeted customer groups are found in a number of different industries such as high-tech, medical, electronics and micromachining. Recent announcements from other metrology companies also attest that metrology equipment manufacturers see this as a burgeoning market.

Mycrona’s product portfolio consists of a complete range of machines for the vision industry. Each product offering is available with camera, laser, or white light scanning sensors as well as contact-probe systems. In addition, the machines already offer Hexagon’s PC-DMIS vision software on all of their products.

The acquired businesses will be integrated into Hexagon Metrology’s vision business. It will be operated with research and development and manufacturing facilities in Germany and China.
