Coordinate Metrology Society Sets Stage for New Era Through Education

To kick off 2017, the Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS) has recently launched a new website and brand refresh with new features and old favorites such as technical papers, presentations, and technical reports, to name but a few. The organization is also in full swing preparing for the 33rd annual 2017 Coordinate Metrology Society Conference (CMSC), July 17–21, 2017, in Snowbird, UT. The newly formed CMS Education Committee is working up plans to introduce additional training sessions at this year’s CMSC. The team will align their activities with the Education Zone, and consider science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities for CMSC 2017 and beyond. In the coming weeks, members of the team will engage with local technical schools, universities, and state officials to promote the activities of the CMS. The results of this outreach will be reported in the next issue of CMSC World coming up this May. We are confident this is the right path forward to encourage growth and attract future metrologists. The CMSC has earned much renown for its original slate of expert technical presentations and papers delivered each year. The Technical Presentations Committee organizes this segment of the conference and interfaces with potential and selected authors/presenters for the CMSC. This year, the Technical Presentations team has introduced a few changes by arranging the presentations into categories and offering a singular track for the conference agenda, which gives attendees expanded access to the technical content.

In fact, the entire CMS Executive Committee is engaged in new activities to target growth of the membership, and address the CMS charter to provide continuing education and activities for the society. I am enthusiastically engaged in developing and launching new government initiatives to generate metrology and senior metrology apprenticeships. There is great momentum in these new standards. Academics are starting to deliver these standards and foster future metrologists through core subjects and the basic principles of scientific, industrial, and legal metrology linking to learning pathways and job roles. Training programs for the latest technologies will be crucial to the initiative’s success, whether it is covering good practices or focused on technology-specific equipment such as portable arms, laser trackers, scanning technology, photogrammetry, optical metrology, 3D visualization, etc. Two key drivers of this progress will be the PrecisionPath Consortium for Large-Scale Manufacturing and the CMS Level One and Level Two Certification Programs.
