This award is patterned after the Baldrige, with two notable exceptions: All organizations--public or private, profit or nonprofit--are eligible, and award categories are set according to the organization's size without limitations on the sector, industry or profit status. The Governor's Award recognizes organizations that have mature quality systems and a sustained record of superior performance. There is no limit to the number of award recipients.

    The California Governor's Quality Award is based on the Baldrige criteria and is designed to stimulate continuous improvement, increase competitiveness and recognize California organizations that excel. Applicants may apply in one or more of four areas: management, marketplace, workplace, community or for the Overall Excellence Award. There is no limit to the number of award recipients. Awards are presented to the winners by the governor of California.  Additional  award levels will be added in 1998.

    These two awards are the top level awards offered by CCQS. The U.S. Senate Productivity Award is limited to large and small manufacturers. The Eureka Award offers seven categories: large and small service, education, health care, nonprofit, government and military/armed forces. Both awards use the most current Baldrige Award criteria.

    The Canada Awards for Excellence recognizes excellence through quality in both private and public sectors, on a national scale. It is based on the Canadian Quality Criteria (separate private and public sector criteria). The majority of regional awards programs on quality also link to the national program, using the same adjudication criteria. Organizations/institutions are required to document their use of quality principles/practices and outline outcomes over a minimum of the past three years. The program has nine categories.

    The Connecticut Award for Excellence is Connecticut's state-sanctioned quality award. Established by the governor in 1993, it is operated as a nonprofit venture between public and private sectors. There are three levels of recognition: the Nutmeg award, for organizations beginning their quality journey; the Charter Oak award, for those that have made substantial progress; and the Genius Award, which mirrors the Baldrige Award.
