Software Manages Large-Scale Training

AlliedSignal, a worldwide advanced technology and manufacturing company specializing in aerospace and automotive products, needed a way to provide Web-based training for its nearly 71,000 employees around the world. After reviewing several products, the company chose Pinnacle Learning Manager (PLM), comprehensive training management software for local area network, intranet and Internet deployment.

Part of the reason for moving to Web-based training was to eliminate the company's dependence on individual desktop configurations, which can be expensive to set up and maintain. AlliedSignal wanted to be able to offer all of its training over the Web so that training and training administration could take place any time worldwide while reducing the costs and productivity loss that frequently accompany training sessions. The company also wanted to retain its existing training courses and database programs.

"PLM is the only training management software that works with all delivery options and seamlessly connects to all of our existing courseware and to our human resource database," says Michael Parham, customer support project manager for AlliedSignal's Business Services division. "As a result, we don't have to spend time or money recoding our existing programs in order to deploy them over the Web and can easily transition from current deployment methods to Web-based methods."

With PLM's unlimited connections capability, all training data, regardless of its source, can be managed in one database. PLM was designed to connect to all computer-based training (CBT) courseware and various business applications without requiring changes to either program. AlliedSignal employees can now access all training instructions, scheduling information and curricula through their Web browsers. The company no longer needs to install training programs on individual work stations, thereby saving significant time and money. Automated score collection also eliminates time-consuming, labor-intensive data entry.

Beyond CBT, PLM also manages instructor-led and other forms of training, thus providing the means for AlliedSignal to manage all aspects of its training programs with a central database and management tool. PLM also generates automatic reports in real time, which allows training administrators on-demand access to progress reports for groups and individuals.

"We have successfully accomplished the first phase of our training program goals--finding and implementing the technology that will enable us to better manage our training programs worldwide," says Parham. "Our goal of deploying Web-based training exclusively is now much more attainable."
