Let me start with a confession: I’m an imposter in the metrology community. My background is in the design engineering community—well-meaning folks who don’t quite grasp the complexities of the manufacturing process and the measurement systems that support it.

If there is a common personality trait among metrologists, it is that we love to argue our point. In the true spirit of “everyone is entitled to my opinion,” lively debate is always present when you get more than one of us in a room together. It is probably why I personally ended up in this field. It is most certainly why I chose to participate on the CMSC Executive Committee.

egardless of the economic indicators discussed on the nightly network news, it appears from our vantage point that the manufacturing segment is coming back. If we back up two years, all of us in the large-volume measurement industry saw the effect of declining markets. Large manufacturers suspended capital spending to preserve cash flow, affecting the companies who provide the hardware and software necessary to do our jobs.

The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has been invaluable to the U.S. measurement industry by developing calibration techniques for equipment used for large volume portable metrology. The United Kingdom’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has made a further commitment to address the lack of training in dimensional metrology. The NPL has developed a multilevel training program dedicated to this goal and is currently looking for a way to bring the training to North America.
