ISO 9000 Registrar and Consultants Guide

By  Dirk Dusharme and Laurel Thoennes

Welcome to Quality Digest's 1997 ISO 9000 Registrar and Consultants Guide. This one-stop guide to registrars and consultants serves as an excellent starting point in your ISO 9000, QS-9000 and ISO 14000 journey.

This special section consists of a matrix listing about 150 consultants specializing in ISO 9000, QS-9000 and/or ISO 14000, and a and matrix listing registrars and the standards they cover. The matrixes are available in PDF format. To get information information on particular registrars, click here.

We contacted nearly 400 consultants and more than 60 registrars by fax. Of those, 60 registrars and 152 consultants responded. If your favorite registrar or consultant isn't listed, it's because they didn't respond to our faxes.

The first part of this guide is our ISO 9000 Consultants Buyers Guide. As mentioned earlier, it consists of more than 150 consulting firms that specialize in ISO 9000, QS-9000 and ISO 14000.

We asked the consultants which standard they consulted on, how many of their clients were registered to each standard, the three primary industries they consult in, the geographic regions primarily served and -- the most controversial question -- whether they guarantee registration. Last year, a number of consultants, registrars and readers complained about this question. We believe it is a valid question because some consultants do, in fact, guarantee that their clients will be registered. We make no judgment about the ethics of the claim.

The second portion of this guide consists of a directory of ISO 9000, QS-9000 and ISO 14000 accredited registrars. It includes the company's name, contact name, address, phone and fax numbers, and Web address. All the information in this section was provided by the registrars.

The final portion of our guide is a matrix consisting of a listing of registrars, the year they were established, which standards they are accredited to register companies to and the three primary industries that they serve.

Again, after last year's guide was published, we heard from a number of people who complained that the number of registrations some of the registrars claimed was inaccurate. Because we cannot validate the current number of companies that each registrar has registered to QS-9000, ISO 9000 and ISO 14001, we decided not to use the numbers supplied to us by the registrars.

As with all Quality Digest guides, the ISO 9000 Registrar and Consultants Guide is in no way meant to endorse or exclude any particular organization. It is meant to be used as the starting point in the data-gathering process. Readers are encouraged to contact the companies directly for more information and to ask for and to check references.

We hope that you find this guide useful in your registration efforts. We value your feedback. E-mail your comments to spaton@qualitydigest.com.
