Starrett Celebrates 125th Anniversary

2005 marks the 125th anniversary of The L.S. Starrett Co.The company was founded in 1880 by Laroy Sunderland Starrett to market his innovative combination square tool, an item that has since become a standard in toolboxes worldwide. Starrett later developed innovative design variations to calipers, spring dividers and indicating gages, and he invented the modern micrometer.

The company is now headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts, and operates manufacturing plants in Ohio, North and South Carolina, Brazil, Scotland, China, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It employs 2,150 people.

“As we celebrate this significant milestone, it’s important to remember the principles on which our company was founded,” says Douglas A. Starrett, president and CEO. “Laroy S. Starrett created a business and philosophy than can best be articulated in his own words: ‘I have believed that I could do no greater good than to help create a business that would give people employment and a chance to earn an honest living.’ We at Starrett pledge to continue the high standard set by our founder.”
