ASTM to Offer Global Proficiency Testing on Thermal Analyses of Plastics

Participants will be able to compare test results with other labs worldwide

(ASTM: West Conshohocken, PA) -- The ASTM International Proficiency Testing Center is pleased to offer a 2010 proficiency testing program on thermal analyses of plastics (TAP) to laboratories who need a statistical quality assurance tool that will enable them to improve and maintain a high level of performance in conducting ASTM differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), oxidative-induction time (OIT) by differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravametric analyses of plastic resins. Interlaboratory comparisons will be made so that participants can compare their test results with other laboratory results worldwide.

Test materials and parameters measured: Each participating lab will receive two different polymeric resins in five-gram quantities having a high and low melting point for each of the two test cycles conducted during the year. Resins to be evaluated in the program include low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulfide, and perfluoroalkoxy. The following test parameters constitutes the scope of the proficiency testing program:

ASTM D3418, Standard test method for transition temperatures and enthalpies of fusion and crystallization of polymers by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC);

ASTM D3850, Standard test method for rapid thermal degradation of solid electrical insulating materials by Thermogravimetric Method (TGA); and

ASTM D3895, Standard test method for oxidative-induction time of polyolefins by Differential Scanning Calorimetry.

 

For each test trial, laboratory participants receive two sample materials along with interactive electronic data report forms and test instructions. Using the specified ASTM program tests, participating laboratories conduct the tests of their choice that they routinely run. Upon completion of testing, each lab electronically submits their data to the ASTM PTP Center for use in generating statistical summary reports. Final reports, which are electronically distributed within a month of the data submission deadline, contain the following: All test results, coded to maintain PTP customer confidentiality; statistical analysis of test data; and charts plotting test results vs. laboratory code.

Test results received through the program will allow laboratories to monitor their thermal analyses strengths and weaknesses in order to maintain accreditation status and compare their test results with labs around the world. Test cycles will be held in February and July. Companies must be registered by Jan. 10, 2010, to be included in the February test trial. The annual subscription fee for both 2010 trials is $350.
