Health care data to power change

(NCQA: Washington) -- The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recently released Quality Compass 2010: Commercial, the nation’s leading database of comparable information on clinical performance and patient experience for 404 commercial health plan products serving 94 million covered lives.

Quality Compass 2010: Commercial compares the clinical performance of participating HMO, POS, and PPO health plans and is the most comprehensive database containing Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) data in the United States. The tool allows users to examine quality improvement, benchmark plans’ performance, and facilitate competitor analysis. Quality Compass 2010: Commercial also provides state, regional, and national benchmarks.

Quality Compass 2010: Commercial includes the following new measures:

• Adult body mass index (BMI) assessment
• Comprehensive diabetes care—HbA1c control (<7% for a selected population)
• Comprehensive diabetes care—HbA1c control (<8%)
• Weight assessment and counseling for nutrition and physical activity for children/adolescents—BMI percentile
• Weight assessment and counseling for nutrition and physical activity for children/adolescents—counseling for nutrition
• Weight assessment and counseling for nutrition and physical activity for children/adolescents—counseling for physical activity

“Health plans, employers, pharmaceutical companies, and others rely on the commercial edition of Quality Compass to guide their quality improvement initiatives,” says Rick Moore, NCQA’s chief information officer. “I am pleased that NCQA has again offered this tool to help purchasers make sound decisions and health plans to pinpoint areas of improvement.”

In late October, NCQA will release Quality Compass 2010: RRU + Quality Index (Commercial). This new product incorporates Relative Resource Use (RRU) measures that capture the total number of resources health plans use to treat patients with select chronic conditions, and aligns their utilization with their HEDIS quality results. The Medicaid edition of Quality Compass will also be available in September 2010.

Quality Compass 2010: Commercial can be ordered online through NCQA’s website, www.ncqa.org/qualitycompass.aspx.
