With the 30th anniversary of the Coordinate Metrology Systems Conference (CMSC) around the corner, I am happy to celebrate World Metrology Week with you. This year’s conference will be held in North Charleston, South Carolina, from July 21–25, 2014. Charleston is the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina. Known for its well-preserved architecture, rich history, delicious food, and southern hospitality, Charleston seems like an ideal location for our beloved conference.

Among the palm trees and palmetto bugs lives the expansive Boeing plant. The plant is home to the newest 787 Dreamliner final assembly and delivery facility. The 1.2 million sq ft facility was selected in 2009 as the new Boeing site. The facility fabricates, assembles, and installs systems for aft (rear) fuselage sections of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and joins and integrates midbody fuselage sections. On Friday, April 25, a tour of the North Charleston Boeing facility will be sponsored by Nikon Metrology and offered to all conference attendees. Please take the time to visit this rapidly growing site. After the tour, guests will be able to see Charleston’s historic sites on a boat tour around downtown Charleston.
On Wed., July 23, 2014, don’t be surprised to see your fellow attendees competitive streaks come out. The fourth annual 5K Fun Run & Walk starts at 6 a.m. at the Embassy Suites North Charleston hotel lobby. All CMSC attendees, exhibitors, and their families are welcome to join. Complimentary shirts will be offered as well. It’s not too late to register on the CMSC website. This “5 billion microns of fun” is sponsored by Innovmetric.
If you are an expert metrologist or just entering the field, our organization’s focus on continuing education and knowledge assessment will provide profession-enhancing tools for the entirety of your career. Testing for the Level One Certification and Level Two Certification will be offered during the CMSC. The Level One examination is a proctored, online assessment consisting of about 200 multiple choice questions covering foundational theory and practice common to most portable 3D metrology devices. The majority of software and hardware combinations will be accommodated during the testing period.
New this year is our Level Two Certification examination for portable CMMs, which is a device-specific performance assessment. During the Level Two assessment, the candidate will use a portable articulating arm to collect a series of measurements on an artifact, and then analyze specific features of that artifact. An expert proctor will observe and evaluate the candidate’s technique and accuracy of measurements within a 2-hour time limit.
In the near future, CMSC-approved companies will be able to qualify to become testing locations where people can take the certification tests at various location and times. During the next few years, the Coordinate Metrology Society will also add other device-specific certifications for laser trackers, scanners, close-range photogrammetry, and post-processing of 3D coordinate data.
The acclaimed Measurement Zone located in the center of the Exhibition Hall will consist of daily educational activities and exciting competitions focusing on advancing the participants’ knowledge and understanding of metrology. The Measurement Zone will also focus on portable arm applications, and conference attendees will learn first-hand the correct way to approach portable measurement arm applications using metrology software. The laser tracker competition is sure to be a favorite. Conference attendees will compete to measure a part and compare it to a design model. Whoever is the most accurate and efficient wins.
At the heart of the conference are the phenomenal technical presentations offered. The technical papers and presentations cover successful applications, best practices, and research and development in the field of metrology. Finally, all of this would not be possible without the conference backbone, our exhibitors. The Exhibition Hall will showcase more than 40 OEMs, service providers, and vendors of portable measurement technology, including industrial photogrammetry solutions, laser trackers, laser radars, articulating arms, short- and long-range laser scanners, laser projection systems, tooling, accessories, and more.
I am excited about this year’s conference opportunities and look forward to seeing you in July for our 30th anniversary!
