› TRACEABILITY ON PLASTIC BOTTLES

Currently our plastic bottle supplier does not use anything to trace the bottles manufactured to a certain day or batch. We haven't required them to do so. The labels showing the product inside has a batch number. We find some problems with the bottle quality and create nonconformances against these suppliers. What does everyone think about making it a requirement that there be a batch code on the bottle? Perhaps having the supplier provide a document that has been signed off on as to the quality of the bottles would be appropriate.

What are the requirements for the Tolerances? Someone came up with the existing tolerance for some reason. Why can’t you inspect the boxes before the carpet is put on? Why do you want to widen the tolerances? I suspect the reason you want to widen them is cost. I do a lot of work with wood and a tolerance of .015 on wood seems ridicules to me.

Some questions seem obvious to me:
(1) If you cannot measure the parts, how will a customer measure them? (i.e. Is it really necessary to measure them?!?) (2) Why not widen the tolerances? (3) Could you make fixtures for Go/NoGo checking of the parts, rather than measuring them? (4) What quality characteristic needs to be measured? (Could you not "qualify" your CNC machine before & after each run & use that data?)
