Back a few years, Michael J. Dreikorn penned a book entitled Aiation Industry Quality Systems, hich was an early attempt to compare the early ISO 9000 regulations as applicable to the Federal Aviation Administration Regulations covering the aerospace industry. Do you have any knowledge of a follow-up publication to that book?"

Implementing SPC is a long story, as Dr. Wheeler can attest, but implementing an SPC Department is even longer. The key is training and willingness to perform knowledgable problem solving. Rote application of the mathematics is useless - you need to have people that understand the math AND the processes that it is being applied to. They need to understand what the charts are going to tell people - and what they cannot tell people. When the charts have gone awry, they need to have the skills to help others perform problem solving. Math skills, people skills, problem solving skills, documentation skills and process knowledge. That a tall order to fill, and that is just to get the right people to start the job. Then you can start the training. The SPC department employees and the operators need to understand the SPC process - but with different depth of knowledge. To be successful, the person that is proposing an SPC chart should work with the operator for several hours to determine if the chart is easy to understand, if it is telling the operator when to do something, if the frequency is sufficient - or too exceesive. Don't just drop the darn charts off and run. Be sure to stop back and evaluate the charts - both to determine if the operators are completing them correctly, and if there is any issues that are clear to the seasoned SPC professional, but not to the operator.
That's the brief answer, I guess...

SPC is a way of thinking with some tools attached. You must practice the way of thinking to successfully implement the technology. I have written over 2000 pages in books on this subject, and still do not have a brief answer.

QS-9000 has a manual dedicated to SPC. It is a good reference and has many examples. Sometimes the public library has reference books that you can check out or you can purchase a book at a book store or on the internet.

Up until now the closest thing to an SPC standard was the AIAG SPC manual published in connection with QS-9000.
But now ISO has published an SPC standard, ISO 11462-1:2001, which covers the subject of SPC and its implementation. It is an unusually interesting and useful document, and if you wish I can e-mail you the entire document free of charge. My e-mail address is hampto9@aecltd.com.

Is your offer to send out a copy of the ISO document on SPC still open? If so, I would be very interested in a copy as well.
My e-mail address is RDHeller@attbi.com.
Thank you very much!

Hampton,
I would be interested in reviewing the ISO document you referenced in your response. I was unaware that ISO had such a creature. If it possible to send it, my email is rvmeyer@gardnerdenver.com.
Regards & Thanks
