elaine, This is how I train my auditors. It may seem a bit vague but it seems to work. I tell them that when they request samples from the auditee, select enough samples to achieve an "internal satisfaction level". There is always a point in a discussion where you begin to either believe or disbelieve what is said. That is in my opinion is sufficient. If this process is stated in your "internal audit" procedure, it also will help you during the regestrar audit because it does not mandate a specific number of questions to be asked.

Elaine,
Depending on the audit objective, "Discovery Sampling" method could be appropriate.
This topic was discussed in depth in my thread from the other forum:

Hi - thanks you've given me some more places to look for some idea for sample sizes in audits. I still find most auditors 'leave it up to their discretion' as to what is a suitable sample size. My concern is what is a reasonable enough sample size to be able to say with enough confidence our inventory tracking is sound or our order files are complete and correct.
Thanks for your help
